Southampton are a club that always manage to have a productive season, even though they are forced to sell their best players. Over the past few years the Saints have also had their fair share of managers, another impact of their over achieving in there Premier League campaigns, resulting in bigger and better sides luring them away every summer.
However for Claude Puel this was a very different story. Even though he did get his side to a League Cup final and finished eighth in the league he was sacked for a poor end to the season. Amidst reports of dressing room unrest, the board decided to look elsewhere. Some saw this as harsh for the Frenchman but a lot of the Southampton fans had lost faith in him.
This leaves the St. Marys men without a manager or head coach and with the lead up to pre-season close. The Southampton board are looking to fill this role quickly, and there has been a lot of speculation of who is going to be the man to take over, here are a few:
The man leading the speculation at the moment is ex Barcelona and Liverpool player Mauricio Pellegrino. He managed Valencia in 2012 and last season managed Deportivo Alaves and got them to the Copa Del Rey final. The Argentine is the leading man to take the job with the bookmakers after his triumphant season with a below average side in Alaves last season. Getting them to play quick attacking football and converting that into goals he looks like the man that Southampton need to try and start competing with the Premier league’s top six elite.
Another man in the frame is an ex-Premier league legend who had a massive part to play in Arsenals Invincible season. That man is Patrick Vieira. The Frenchman had a well decorated career playing at some of the best clubs all around the world including Arsenal, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Juventus. However his managing career is very different only having experience managing two teams, Manchester City reserves and New York City FC in the MLS. This gives the idea that Vieira is very under qualified, is he ready to take on such a big job like this so soon? In my opinion, playing in the Premier league doesn’t mean you can manage in the Premier League. I don’t quite think Patrick Vieira is at that stage yet to take on the role as Southampton’s manager. Nonetheless his speculation is ever growing and if he does become the next Saints manager he could silence the doubters.
The third and final man who there has been avid speculation about in regards to the Southampton’s manger position is the Dutchman Frank de Boer. After being linked previously with other Premier League sides like Liverpool and Everton, he is now prime contender for the hot-seat on the south coast and has the pedigree to up hold this role. He has played for some of the best teams in Europe and has gone on to manage similar top sides with success. He has won league and cup trophies with Ajax as their boss between 2010-2016, he was assistant manager when Holland got to the 2010 World cup final and last year spent his time in Italy, managing Inter Milan. In my opinion, Frank De Boer would be a steu-up for Southampton from Claude Puel. His reputation would allow the club to bring in players that would seriously bolster there side.
